Producer Rick Rock, who has worked with artists such as Tupac and other hip-hop icons, has began to focus on his own group Federation. Rock assembled the California-based, three-man crew of rappers Doonie Baby, Goldie Gold and Mr. Stres to bring forth his true, unaltered sound and vision.
Federation’s debut album, FEDERATION – THE ALBUM (Montbello/Virgin), is a combination of Rick Rock’s beats of Dirty-South-Soul-meets-West-Coast funk style.
The lead single “Hyphy” allowed the group to gain recognition in the Bay Area as well as in Los Angeles. Federation makes their unapologetic vocal assault work by cleverly balancing things out with their quick sense of humor.
Rick Rock spent the past few years hand-picking Doonie Baby, Goldie Gold and Mr. Stres. The Mississippi-born, Alabama-raised Doonie Baby (AKA Doon Coon) is considered the “lead general” of Federation. He moved to the Bay Area five years ago and made a name for himself as a skilled rapper.
Soon thereafter Rick Rock crossed paths with the Nevada-born, Vallejo/Fairfield- raised rapper Goldie Gold and persuaded him to give him an opportunity to show his mic skills. Rock was blown away.
Despite the group’s increasing potency, both Rick Rock and Doonie Baby felt that Federation needed one more powerful rap character. They found him in Fairfield, California native Mr. Stres (AKA Frumpz), who had been rapping for years and had a history of shared ciphers with Doonie Baby.
With their unique sound and one-of-a-kind lyrics, Federation has been at the forefront of the “hyphy” movement and have many people going “dumb” and “stupid” to the new era of west coast rap that has began to get adopted by other regions.
